CHAPTER 10

“This reminds me of old times,” Hugh said around a mouthful of bread.

“It’s nice, just the four of us,” Doona replied.

John nodded. “I like Andrew and I enjoy spending time with him, but it is nice to have just the old group together.”

“I agree, but I do hope that Nathan won’t be coming back to the island for future meetings,” Bessie said.

Everyone else nodded.

“I’m not sure I understand why he’s here this time,” Doona said.

Bessie shrugged. “Andrew said that Nathan wanted to get away from Rugby for a while and that this case has been bothering him since it happened. He and Nathan have been friends for many years.”

“I can’t imagine why,” Hugh said. He flushed when everyone looked at him. “Andrew is really nice and Nathan is, well, he seems quite unpleasant.”

“Let’s talk about something else,” Bessie suggested. “The pizza is good and the garlic bread is wonderful.”

“I’ve driven past the new place in Lonan a dozen times, but I’ve never stopped,” Hugh said. “I will next time, though, if I’m hungry.”

“So next time,” Doona teased.

Bessie laughed. “I hadn’t heard there was a new restaurant in Lonan. Where is it?”

John’s mobile rang, interrupting the conversation. He left the room to answer it. While he was gone, the trio talked about the new restaurant and the food.

“Jennifer is going to stay at Noble’s overnight,” John told them as he sat back down. “I can’t tell you anything more than that.”

“You mean you won’t tell us anything more than that,” Doona countered. “Now I wish I were still working at the station.”

John smiled at her. “You know you can have your job back if you want it, but not if you’re going to quit again once you find out what’s happening with Jennifer.”

Doona chuckled. “I miss being at the station because I got to see you all day and because I really liked all of the constables and the rest of the staff, but I don’t miss working. Having said that, I’m now spending hours on the phone every day dealing with the holiday park, so it isn’t as if I’m living a life of leisure.”

“Maybe you should think about selling your half of the park,” Bessie suggested.

“I’m not ready to do that. Not yet,” Doona replied firmly.

“So what happened to Jennifer?” Hugh asked. “I wasn’t close enough to take the call when it came in, and I missed everything.”

Bessie and Doona told him about Pat calling to Bessie down the beach and everything that had happened subsequently. When they were done, Hugh shook his head.

“It sounds as if she’s making up the entire story. I can’t imagine why she’d do that, though. The police take kidnapping allegations very seriously,” he said.

“I don’t think she expected the police to get involved,” Bessie told him. “I think she was just planning to share her story with Andy and maybe with me.”

“Why you?” Doona asked.

Bessie shrugged. “I suspect it bothers Andy that I’m clearly on Elizabeth’s side in all of this. Jennifer
